Uploading Your Book FAQs

Do I need to prepare my book text prior to uploading?

Your finished book text will look exactly like the word processing text that you upload. This means that the pagination (what appears on each page) will be the same and the look of the text (the font) will remain the same. Use the formatting tools available in your specific word processing program to make your word processing text look like the text that you want to appear in your finished book.

Printed I-Proclaim books are 6 inches wide and 9 inches high. Prior to uploading your text, you should change your page margins to the following so that your word processing text page is the same size as your finished book page. You can usually change these margins in the Page Set-up section of your word processing program. This is located under File in Microsoft Word.

  • Top and bottom margins set to 2 inches.
  • Left and right margins set to 2.2 inches.
  • Gutter: 0
  • Headers and footers must have a distance from the edge of 2 inches.
  • Page size should be 8.5 x 11

When you change the margins for your document, sometimes the pagination for your document will change (words and sentences might bump to another page). Scroll through your document to make sure that the pages look like you want them to look in the finished book.

If you need help with creating a basic, professional page design, you may want to consider publishing via our affordable Red Lead Press imprint. For a small fee, professionals work with your digital text and create a basic page design for you.

What if my document is password protected?

Your document will not convert to a finished page file if it is password protected. Please do not upload password protected documents.

What types of file can I upload?

You can upload word processor files created by Microsoft Word 97/2000, Microsoft Works 6 and from most other word processor programs. If you are using a file from a program other than Microsoft Word or Works, please make sure that the file is saved with the extension .rtf (Rich Text File) or .txt (Plain Text).

You can also upload a Portable Document File (PDF).

What paper size should I use when formatting my book?

Use 8.5 x 11 inch paper size.

What size margins should I use?

Under the File menu, choose Page Set-up and change the margins (in inches) to:

  • Top: 2.0
  • Bottom: 2.0
  • Left: 2.2
  • Right: 2.2
  • Gutter: 0
  • Headers and footers must have a distance from the edge of 2 inches.

When you change the margins for your document, sometimes the pagination for your document will change (words and sentences might bump to another page). Scroll through your document to make sure that the pages look like you want them to look in the finished book.

Which fonts can I use?

You may use any fonts supported by the word processing program used to author your book.

What is the minimum number of pages in a book?

Books must be at least 32 but no greater than 650 pages long, when formatted using a 6 x 9 inch page layout as described above.

Which version of Word should I use?

Please use Microsoft Word 97/2000.

What are the requirements for uploading a PDF file?

Please make sure that the original document on which you based your PDF file uses the following layout:

  • Top and bottom margins set to 2 inches.
  • Left and right margins set to 2.2 inches.
  • Gutter: 0
  • Headers and footers must have a distance from the edge of 2 inches.

What languages does I-Proclaim accept?

I-Proclaim supports many languages including English, Spanish and French. Languages that are currently not supported include Greek, Hebrew and Arabic, Cyrillic languages such as Russian, and Asian languages.

Can I use color on my pages?

You may use color when preparing your word processing files and can upload those files for processing. On your My Projects page you can choose to print the inside of your book in color or black and white.

Can I use images in my book?

Yes.

Can I attach image files to my book?

No. Any images you use in your book should already be present, in the correct size and position, in the file that you upload to I-Proclaim.

Book Sales and Purchases FAQs

When will I be able to buy my book?

From your Project Page you will be able to create and review your book's text pages and cover as many times as you wish and make corrections and changes as many times as you wish.

Only when you are satisfied with your project should you click on the "Publish" link and publish your book. You should use the publish command only once and only when you are ready to have your book made available for purchase by consumers and yourself.

When you press the Publish link, you start the process of having a listing created for your book at the I-Proclaim bookstore and your files are sent to a printing facility to await orders. When a bookstore listing has been created -- generally within 1 business day--, you will be notified by e-mail and a link will appear on your My Projects page that will allow you to order your book at your author price.

How can I stop my book from being sold at the I-Proclaim bookstore?

When your book has been published, you will see a link on your Project Page called "Unpublish Book". The unpublish command is to be used only once when you wish to withdraw your work from circulation.

If a listing has been created for your book at the I-Proclaim bookstore, and you unpublish your work, it will take 3 business days from the time of your request for your book to be removed from circulation. During this time, you will be unable to re-publish the same book project.

For up to three business days following your request to unpublish, your work will be sold at the I-Proclaim bookstore in the exact same format as when you published the work.

You will be notified by e-mail when your book has been removed from the I-Proclaim bookstore and only then will you be allowed to republish the work with changes, if you so desire.

Where will people be able to buy my book?

Your book will be available for purchase at the I-Proclaim Bookstore. You receive a royalty of 30% for each book sold through the bookstore.

You may also purchase copies of your book at your discounted Author Price and then resell them directly to consumers for full retail price.

Will my book have an ISBN and bar code?

No. An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) and bar code is generally necessary to sell your book through bookstores who may wish to stock your book. If you would like to get an ISBN for your book you may want to consider publication via our Red Lead Press or RoseDog Books imprint.

Will my book have a copyright?

No, a copyright application will not be submitted to the Library of Congress for registration. However, your work will still have some protection under U.S. Copyright Law. If you would like a copyright registered for your book, you may want to consider publishing via our Red Lead Press or RoseDog Books imprints.
